Q.How many
residents do we serve? How many are in each home? Do men and women live
in the same homes?
A.
Currently 36; licensed for 57; 3-4 in group homes; up to 12 in Assisted
Living; in Assisted Living we have both men and women.
Q. How are we funded? What is the per diem rate?
How is billing handled?
A.
Funded through the Developmental Disabilities Administration as well
as private donations. Per diem is determined by assessment and classification
on matrix scale based on needs of individual.
Q. What
types of activities are the individuals involved in? How much choice do
they have as to the activities they do?
A.
Individuals participate in a wide range of activities based on individual
interests and personal choice. This includes craft classes, bible study,
trips to library, exercise opportunities, trips to parks, movie theatres,
beauty parlors and barbers, church, and restaurants.
Q. What
is the focus of the day program? Are they learning job skills? Do they
earn wages?
A.
Star offers a day habilitation program designed to establish and refine
meaningful work skills for the maximum independence of the individual.
Also offered are social leisure opportunities for those not suited for
work skill development, and a retirement program for those beyond the
work phase of their life. Individuals developing work skills earn a
monthly stipend that varies with the work performed.
Q. What is the training provided to staff? How much turnover do we
have?
A.
ALL employees are provided a wide range of orientation and training
programs designed to maximize their understanding of individuals with
disabilities and their special needs. In addition, each employee working
in a direct support capacity receives training tailored to the specific
needs of the individuals they will be working with. Maintaining the
lowest possible turnover rates is one of the highest priorities at Star
Community.
Q. Do we provide services to people with challenging
behaviors? How do we support those people?
A.
Individuals with challenging behaviors are provided the support of experts
in both psychology and psychiatry. Behavior support
plans are developed to support the individuals in the least restrictive
environment possible.
Q. Do the residents attend church? Is it by choice?
A.
All residents at Star are offered the opportunity to attend church or
chapel services, at a variety of worship services within
the community. Attendance is encouraged but entirely voluntary.
Q. Are
families encouraged to be involved? Do the residents visit their family
homes?
A.
Involvement with family and friends is highly supported and encouraged.
Most individuals receive frequent communication with family and friends
through phone calls, letters, and visits.
Q. Do the
individuals participate in the community? Do they take vacations?
A.
Individuals living at Star are in contact with, and
participate in, their community on a daily basis. In the work setting,
Star residents or participants have contracts with over 70 local businesses
and organizations. Residentially, Star residents utilize public service
such as libraries, parks, and the YMCA. Star residents shop at various businesses and take
vacations based on their interests.
Q. What
medical care is provided?
A.
Star provides the services of an one RN, one LPN and one part-time assistant. On call coverage for medical needs is
provided 24 hours a day. Star has the services of a local physician
who provides oversight of health care needs to all individuals, and
enlists the services of a wide variety of specialized health care professionals
to meet the individual needs of its residents.
